Hewitt-Trussville didn't leave any doubt who was the top large school at the Jefferson County track and field meet Monday. The host Huskies swept the boys and girls titles. The boys had 200 points while Shades Valley was runner-up with 157. The girls had 209 points and runner-up Clay-Chalkville had 120. For the girls, it was Hewitt-Trussville's 13th consecutive county championship. "I guess the thing is the kids are self-disciplined and are able to handle for the most part what their job is out here," Huskies coach David Dobbs said. The small school division for the boys was a different story. Erwin edged Mortimer Jordan 145-138. Pleasant Grove had 238 points to win the girls division and Erwin was runner-up with 145. "We thought it would be very close," Erwin boys coach Willie Miller said. "The kids are really focused on the track. They wanted to come out and do the best they could going into sectionals. A lot of the kids had to be called on a number of times to do a job." In the large school division, Julia Hinton for the Huskies won the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Lane Schlitz won the 800-meter, 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter races. Clay-Chalkville's Tracy Rowan took first in the 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, high jump and triple jump. For the boys, Elza Allen led Shades Valley. He won the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, as well as the high jump and was part of the 4x400-meter relay team that won. Jeremy Tyson won the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes for Minor, while Blake McDaniel won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 for Hewitt-Trussville. Casey Brown from Hewitt-Trussville took first in the discus and javelin. In the small school division, Pleasant Grove outdistanced the competition despite not having its girls star, senior Kim Williams, for most of the meet. Williams, who left early for the Bryant-Jordan awards banquet, competed just in the javelin and won with a distance of 120-08. Coach Jay Satterfield thought his Spartans might have problems scoring a lot of points with Williams out, but his underclassmen were up to the challenge. "We're going to be OK (when Williams graduates)," Satterfield said. "A lot of people don't think we are, but our ninth and tenth graders are talented. They work hard. I told them that was our first step for us, to win the county, then to go to sectionals and then to state." Erwin's Katrina Harrell won the 100 and 200, Raven Wynn won the high jump and triple jump and Kametria Smith won the 110 and 300 hurdles. Pleasant Grove's Adrienne Hicks won the 1,600 and 3,200. Mortimer Jordan's Shelly Arant won the shot put and discus. For the boys, Pleasant Grove's Norris Johnson won the 100 and 200. Daniel Ross from Mortimer Jordan won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Erwin's Terrell Hardy won the high jump, long jump and triple jump.
